Wagner Chief claims that his organization is ‘freeing’ Africa.
Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Russian Wagner mercenary group, claimed in a video released on Monday that his organization was helping to "free up" Africa and hinted that he was there.
Prigozhin, a former supporter of the Kremlin whose organization overthrew the military leadership of Russia in June, has made few public appearances since the uprising.
The group has alliances with various countries in Africa, particularly Mali and the Central African Republic, and maintains a significant military presence there. "We are at work.
Over 50 degrees Celsius, or 122 degrees Fahrenheit, are present. In the video, Prigozhin is heard saying, "Just the way we like it. " AFP was unable to quickly confirm this.
After Prigozhin is seen carrying an assault rifle, the camera pans around to show military vehicles stationed on a sizable, desolate plain.
"The Wagner Group is engaged in search and reconnaissance operations. Making Russia even more powerful throughout all continents, and Africa even more liberated," stated Prigozhin. Wagner's alleged operations in Africa come as tensions rise in Niger, which was shaken by a coup in July that resulted in the installation of a military junta and the overthrow of the country's government. A Wagner-affiliated organization in Russia tweeted a letter purportedly from Prigozhin, who claimed that the Niger events were related to the country's struggle against "colonizers."
