The National Union of Rivers State Students NURSS has called on the Nigeria Police Force to stop the killing of innocent students.
The Public Relations Officer PRO of NURSS Timi Mbaba stated this to our correspondent while reacting to the Monday’s protest at the University of Port Harcourt over hike in school fees.
Timi Mbaba said that the brutal killing of protesting students is an infringement on their fundamental human rights. He said the students have the right to protest any anti-students polices initiated by the university authorities.
The PRO of NURSS also called on the Inspector General of Police IGP to bring sanity among members of the Police Force. Mbaba said that indiscriminate shooting of unarmed citizens by the security forces is now rampant in Rivers State.
”We call on the Inspector General of Police Solomon Arase to call his men to order over the incessant killing of innocents citizens in Rivers State”. The constant intimidation and harassment of students by men of the force is an infringement on our fundamental human right”. he said.
”We also demand for the immediate prosecution of the officers on ground during the students protest”.
The PRO of NURSS also called for the immediate release of students arrested by the Nigeria Police during the Monday’s protest by UNIPORT students. He warned that the Police will face a legal battle with the student body should they fail to release the students.
He however, commended the Governor of the State Nyesom Wike for his prompt intervention into the matter. He said the commission of inquiry set up the State Governor will reveal the root cause of the problems that ignited the protest.
