Nasarawa State commissioner of Police, Mr. Lawal Shehu, has confirmed the killing of two police officers by a hit-and-run vehicle in Lafia.

Shehu told journalists on Wednesday that he got the report at about 6.05 a.m.

“I got a report that two of my men, who were returning from their duty post along Shendam road, Lafia, on a motor cycle were knocked down by an unknown driver that sped away.

“From the report, the two policemen died on the spot because there was no one to assist them,” he said.

He said that the two officers were attached to the Department of Operations and had closed from a night duty at NIPOST office in Lafia.

The police commissioner said that investigation into the incident had commenced, and vowed to arrest the fleeing driver.

The names of the deceased were given as Inspector Matthew Omale and Sergeant Isiaku Agidis.

The police spokesman, ASP Ismaila Numan has also confirmed the recovery of an unidentified corpse by police on patrol at the Ombi II area of the state capital.

Reports earlier indicated that the death of the man believed to be in his 20s was as a result of a clash between rival cult groups which happened shortly after the 2016 matriculation of the Nasarawa State Polytechnic, Lafia.
