The National Union of Rivers State Students NURSS has called on the Management of different Higher Institutions in Rivers State to desist from making obnoxious policies that are against the welfare of students in the state.
The National President of NURSS Dan-Jumbo Vincent said that most of the policies have inflicted hardship on students across the nation.
”It is no longer news the fact that many tertiary institutions in the state as well as the country have reeled out various obnoxious policies in a sheer bid to enforce 100% school fee compliance. Two of such policies include the UNIPORT’s NO SCHOOL FEE NO EXAM POLICY which led to a massive demonstration as well as death of students and the RIVCAS policy of 10,000 surcharge after a particular date deadline, which may also lead to an impasse if not managed properly. The list is unending.”
The NURSS President Dan-Jumbo Vincent stated that the harsh economic reality in Rivers State and the country have made it difficult for students to cope with these policies.
”Due to the harsh economic reality on ground, most of our Rivers State students especially the indigent students as well as the physically challenged have found it extremely difficult if not impossible to meet up with these policies which has caused untold misery and frustration to the students”.
The NURSS President also appealed to the Governor of Rivers State Nyesom Wike to assist the students by paying providing scholarships for Rivers students especially the physically challenged.
”while we commend the landmark achievement of His Excellency,Chief Barr.E.N.Wike who is a student loving Governor and an ardent lover of education, in less than one year in office especially in road/infrastructural development, we wish to remind the Governor of the promise of prompt payment of bursary made to Rivers State students during the campaign which gingered the students to overwhelmingly vote for him. We therefore appeal for the prompt payment of students bursary as well as provision of local scholarship for Rivers Students especially the physically challenged”, he said.
