Schools have reportedly closed in Umuchigbo community in Abakpa Nike of Enugu State following clashes between the members of the Biafra Nations Youth League (BNYL) and Fulani herdsmen.
Leader of the BNYL, Prince Chimezie Obuka, said youth from the organisation were behind the reprisal attacks.
He alleged the herdsmen launched an attack in the area but encountered the BNYL security personnel returning from Uwani.
Obuka described the battle as “serious”, lasting three hours.
“We will continue to defend our people,” a defiant Obuka said.
“The President (Muhammadu Buhari) should stop his kinsmen because we are ready to match violence for violence, burning down our church is what we will not tolerate next time.”
More than 1 000 victims have reportedly been killed since the beginning of the year following clashes between villagers and the herdsmen.
