The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital UPTH Chapter has denied allegations that nurses at the Intensive Care Unit of the institution are exploiting patients at the hospital by selling oxygen cylinders bought by patients.
The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives UPTH Chapter said this in a statement signed by its Chairman Dr WICHENDU MADONNA CHOGONUM and the Secretary TOBIN COMFORT while reacting to a viral online publication by the Guardian Newspapers titled ‘UPTH’s ICU: Horror, Nightmare as caregivers exploit sick dying patients’ published on June I 2024.
Dr WICHENDU MADONNA CHOGONUM while speaking to newsmen said that the alleged health assistant who was accused of selling oxygen cylinders is not a registered nurse.
She said that oxygen cylinders are managed and administered by Anesthetic Technicians and other health professionals and not nurses.
She noted that the information in the online publication on June 1 2024 is misleading and false.
The Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives UPTH Chapter Dr. WICHENDU further assured the public that the dedicated nurses at the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital are committed to delivering professional care with the highest standards.
She said the Nurses had consulted their legal team to file a lawsuit against the media agency.
