TUC, Rivers State council says the girl child can achieve whatever she wants in life with determination and moral support from the society.
As part of activities marking this year’s International Day of the Girl Child, the Women Commission of TUC took its sensitization programme to a private secondary school in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
The chairperson of the Women Commission of Trade Union Congress, Rivers State Oroma Olumati during an event in Port Harcourt to mark the International Day of the Girl Child said that girl child deserves an equal opportunity like their male counterparts.
The event held at Topline School, Elelenwo, on Tuesday, had in attendance members of the TUC Women Commission in Rivers State led by its chairperson, Mrs. Oroma Olumati.
In her opening remarks, Mrs. Olumati thanked the TUC in Rivers State and its Chairman, Comrade Foster Onyefuru for the support to make the occasion a reality.
“We thank our chairman, Comrade Ikechukwu Onyefuru, for giving us this platform. We’re here to sensitize you to make you realize that you can become whatever you want to be in life. Be it a doctor, scientist, and whatever and that is why we have brought a guest speaker to speak on the topic,” she noted.
The guest speaker at the event, Mrs. Enajite Wealth Emmanuel, a medical practitioner, and author, who spoke on the topic: Be Bold, Be Brave, Be You, challenged the students to remain focused so as to achieve their goals in life.
She said: “we understand the rights of the girl child, her challenges and potentials…. according to the United Nations, girls are very important in the development of society.
“In this digital age, girls must challenge themselves and use it to better their lives. They can be change agents through the use of the internet. The internet is not for watching movies, but to learn hard skills. Gone are the days when girls are told to sit down there. That their place is in the kitchen and bedroom,” she continued.
Mrs. Wealth Emmanuel noted that women are sitting pretty well running big foundations and organizations and can also run a country. If given the opportunity, she argued that women can run the country to economic prosperity.
Some of the students who spoke to our correspondent said they have learned to be determined to achieve whatever they want to achieve in life.
One of the highlights of the event was the distribution of pads to the adolescent students of the school.
