Fifteen youths of Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State sponsored by the Chairman of the Council, Erastus Charles Awortu have now graduated from the Charkin Maritime Academy in Port Harcourt, with one of the graduands, Ukotije Gogo Hezekiah emerging as the Best Graduating Cadet.
The passing out and convocation ceremonies of the fifteen Cadets sponsored by Erastus Charles Awortu’s administration for the National Diploma in Nautical Science and Marine Engineering took place on Saturday at the premises of the Charkin Maritime Academy in Port Harcourt.

Chairman of Andoni Local Government Council, Erastus Charles Awortu while speaking at the occasion, appealed to other Local Government Councils in the State to consider the training of their youths in Maritime Education so as to build requisite and sufficient manpower for Rivers State in the Maritime Industry.
The Andoni Council Boss, Erastus Charles Awortu, who expressed satisfaction, argued that Rivers State could boast of adequate manpower in the maritime sector within the possible time in future if each of the twenty-three Local Government Chairmen sponsors at least, five persons to study at the Academy.
The Andoni Council Chairman Erastus Charles Awortu urged the beneficiaries of the Maritime training programme to make good use of the opportunity by creating value for themselves, their families and their immediate communities.
He assured that his administration would monitor the progress of the beneficiaries and assist them, where necessary to attain career success.
In his keynote address, the Founder and Proprietor of Charkin Maritime Academy, Dr. Charles Wami called on the government and industry players to key into the programme of the institution, in order to bridge the manpower gap and provide innovative solutions in the Maritime Industry.
In the meantime, the Best Graduating Cadet, Ukotije Gogo Hezekiah and other beneficiaries of the programme thanked the Andoni Council Chairman, Erastus Charles Awortu for the life-changing opportunity
Rivers State House of Assembly to consider Bill mandating LGAs to train youths in Maritime Skills
The Member representing Ogu/Bolo State Constituency in the Rivers State House of Assembly, Honourable Arnold Davis has expressed regrets that the State is far behind her Lagos State counterpart in the Marine industry.
The Ogu/Bolo State Lawmaker, Arnold Davis in an interview with newsmen on the sideline of the graduation and convocation ceremonies of some Cadets at Charkin Maritime Academy in Port Harcourt noted that shortages in the manpower need of the state in the Marine industry could be addressed if all the Local Government Councils sponsor their youths like Andoni Local Government Council
The member representing Ogu/Bolo State Constituency in the Rivers State House of Assembly, Honourable ARNOLD DAVIS gave the indication that the State Assembly may consider coming up with a bill mandating Local Government Councils to sponsor youths in the Maritime Academy so as to boost participation of Rivers State in the opportunities provided by the Maritime industry
