Following the protests embarked upon by students of the University of Lagos over poor power and water supply, the Nigerian police on Friday arrested and detained the president of the Students Union, Olaniyan.

DAILY POST recalls that the management of the school had on Friday, ordered an indefinite closure of the institution, stressing that no student should be seen in the school premises after 10am.

This followed an emergency meeting of the institution’s Senate and contained in a circular which, “considered the situation on campus occasioned by the ongoing agitation of the student body over poor electricity and water supply in the community, and the difficulty faced by the large number of students living off campus to attend classes as a result of the fuel crisis.”

Students, however, refused to vacate the Akoka campus of the school as they sealed the gates, using trash collectors to mount blockades.

While some of the students said they were stranded due to high cost of transportation as a result of the fuel scarcity, others said they needed more time to pack their things from the hostels.

Relatively, spokesperson of the Student Union, was also arrested.

Reports allege that their arrest came after they allegedly called UNILAG Vice Chancellor ‘drunk’ in a press statement.

They were, however, later released but reportedly had their phones seized by the police.
